The Australian Government has taken the extraordinary step of fully subsidising Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy’s $900 fine for giving the finger to the Collingwood cheer-squad.
“We are elected by the people and our policies must be reflective of the philosophies of the people” declared Prime-Minister Julia Gillard over the chorus of boos that now follow her around on a daily basis.
“In our view every Australian, if given the opportunity, would tell the Collingwood cheer squad to f*ck off if their sides was 10 goals up.”
The Government policy is reflective of a growing trend towards public sympathy in relation to tribunal decisions. Earlier this month, a number of players from rival clubs offered to serve Matthew Scarlett’s ban for hitting enigmatic Fremantle forward Hayden Ballantyne.
